Zhang Wei ponders China’s shifting cultural identity since the country reopened to foreign trade in 1978. For his series, Artificial Theater (2009-2018), Zhang creates digital composites of iconic portraits. Each image contains layered, multiple fragments of facial features from numerous Chinese people, flattening the famous into the unknown. The works blurs the line between celebrity and ordinary, hero and mortal, while commenting on the increasing adoration of Western celebrities in China, where culture continues to develop into one that is driven by consumer consumption and desire.
