'Suzhou Cherry Blossom' is a work demonstrative of Chunya’s expressive brushstrokes and vibrant use of color. The lush foliage reflects not only Chunya’s background in traditional Chinese painting, but also his interest in conveying the sensibility of the German Neo-Expressionists.

Zhou Chunya (Chinese, b. 1955) is an abstract expressionist whose paintings blend eastern and western techniques. Originally trained as a Chinese propagandist, he became inspired by German Expressionism while studying abroad, blending it with traditional Chinese calligraphy. Rising to critical acclaim due to his ‘Green Dog’ series, Chunya’s later work has been characterized by peach blossoms and landscapes. His work was featured in a retrospective at the Shanghai Art Museum in 2010, and can be found in multiple public collections including the Tang Contemporary Art Center.
